Bane 1 3 Very allergic to potatoes (20 damage/round ingested) Easily Distracted 1 1 Sea mammals. Description: Twelve years old and tall, Meri's obviously hit her growth spurt early. She comes complete with tanned skin and perky attitude (as well as nose). Her eyes are hazel, and she has black hair that wants to fly everywhere, but it's tied back in a ponytail and she's almost always wearing a Pokemon style baseball cap. The tips of her hair are also dyed blue. She skates around on a nice pair of rollerblades which make her look even taller, and she's never seen without her cap, her backpack (which has her deck and extra cards in it), or her star bracelet (straight from Yu-Gi-Oh!). She wears jean shorts, a tank top or t-shirt (with a windbreaker if it's a little on the cooler side), and usually sticks to primary colors. She has dark shades on hand, and sometimes she even wears them! Meredith is clearly used to warmer weather and doesn't know how to dress in many more layers than that. Personality: Meredith is a slightly cocky, definitely perky, friendly girl, and she's just That Junior High School age, which is the worst place for kids to be. A comic book geek and a collectable card game freak, Meri is also a soft vegetarian (she'll eat sea things and eggs and cheese, but not actual red meat or poultry) and environmentalist: all of which basically means she's quite the idealist. The only thing that's probably keeping her from getting picked on is that she's also a jock, though not in the sports team sense. Just in the general really damn fit sense. Meri has a disgusting amount of talent, and anyone who actually wants to win will pick her over any boy in a game of kickball. Some kids at school may tease her, but it's hard to tell if she even notices. She's just happy to be here. Background: Meredith was born in the Florida Keys - Key Largo, specifically, which is known for its beautiful reefs and booming tourist industry. Her family inherited quite a lot of money on both sides, so she (and they) never hurt for cash. Meri's an only child, and both parents spoil her without thinking they do, being willing to indulge her in anything she wants to do or try. (For the record, Meri doesn't realize she's spoiled, either.) They're also particularly indulgent when it comes to her environmental crusadership and her eating habits. (The fact that Meri is allergic to potatoes probably helped soften her decision to not eat chicken, beef, or pork, either. It's not hard at all in comparison.) They're busy people, however, and while Meri's mother is almost always home, she's usually not paying any attention unless Meri disturbs her. Meri's been able to swim since before she could walk, and she could rollerblade since soon after, as her father was in the habit - at least in her earlier years - of taking her around the neighborhood. She's always been an unusually active child, preferring running and playing to books or movies (much to her mother's chagrin). The one real exception to that rule is her fascination with comic books, probably because of the abundance of pictures, faster-paced and action oriented storylines, and the detachment from boring reality she finds there. Collectable Card Games also fit the scheme, as it's a very fluid process, with new sets, deck building, and playing. You can't get Meri to sit down and watch Yu-Gi-Oh past one episode (if you're lucky), but she'll play it all the time. Unfortunately, with a child like this, grades are going to suffer. Though Meri was popular enough in Key Largo with her friendly and tomboyish nature, her grades were abysmal. Her parents picked up on this problem and started to remind her to do her homework. Fortunately, Meri's too conscientious to outright lie to her parents or ignore them, so a homework check or two (which can be as small as "Meri, did you do your homework yet?" called down the hall) every day is enough to keep her doing the bare minimum. As such, Meri's grades climbed to C's, which is where they generally stay. In the break between grade school and junior high school, Meri's father was transferred to a studio in New York City, and the rest of the family went with him. That same year, Meri hit a tremendous growth spurt, and though she was a little tall for her age already, she shot up some six inches to a towering 5'8". That school year found her in a new house and a new school, with a fairly new body on top of it, which made her rather clumsy to start off. Though Meri tried to make friends the same way she always did, tomboyishness wasn't as accepted in this new place, and the only person who she really connected with was a boy named Rickie (Fredrick Morton), a boy with permanently skinned knees and loud, Hawaiian shirts. Fortunately for her, Rickie would quickly turn into the best friend she's ever had in her short life. From California, he also moved over the past summer. He shared her love for rollerblading, comics, and collectable card games, and it's been nearly impossible to separate them since they met. Meri's leading a pretty good life now. Some kids tease her at school, and she certainly does stick out, but they're too smart to say anything to her face - and Meri's too oblivious to notice something more subtle than that. Confident in the general goodness of human nature and too spontaneous and distracted to actually join any school sports teams, she continues her environmental crusade for Mutant Pokemon. Save the whales! (Yeah, she's totally got ADD, or something like it.) Fredrick Morton: Rickie's the luckiest and unluckiest child who ever existed. Everything goes his way or nothing goes his way, but he always comes through alive, which is probably a bad precedent when it comes to self-preservation. He has messy brown hair - a mix of light and dark - and brown eyes, is about average height for a boy his age (so much shorter than Meri), and a definite preference for loud Hawaiian shirts. Instead of tanning (which Meri does), he burns, but that doesn't keep him out of the sun ever. Rickie's also a very good rollerblader, though he has a tendency to try crazy stunts when skating around, and his CCG decks tend to revolve around chance... but when they work, they work really well. Meri is so not going out with him. He also speaks with a bit of a valley accent. Just a little, y'know? But it's totally there. Chad Turner: Meri's father, Chad is an executive for Virgin Records. While good at his job, Chad is also convinced he can relate to the younger generation(s) and, worse, that he's actually hip. (Meri probably gets her obliviousness from him.) He doesn't just want to be a parent; he also wants to be a friend. Fortunately, he'll back off - temporarily - if Meri tells him to. He gets every new top 40 song that comes out and will listen to it relentlessly, so when he's around, the Turner household is always filled with the latest music (these days, that's hip hop, which makes Chad look *really* bad when he's trying to "get jiggy with it"). The good part about a father who wants to be a friend is he tends to give Meri straight answers (instead of Rote Father Responses) if she comes to him with clearly serious questions. Evelyn Turner: Meri's mother, Evelyn Turner is a respected food critic who's convinced she's writing the next great American novel. As such, when she's not off doing work, she's typically doing other work. Locked in her office at home, Evelyn researches, writes, and reads herself into a frenzy, occasionally bursting out to look up anything from how to tame horses to the French Revolution to alcoholism in the great depression. Her mood is directly dependent on how well she feels she's doing with her novel at any given time, so she can come across as a bit manic-depressive. It's probably a good thing Meri isn't involved in any sports teams, or Mrs. Turner would probably stress herself out by trying to pay attention to those while writing and researching at the same time. Meri isn't entirely sure what the book is about, outside of that there's some romance (yuck), some sort of mystery (okay), and that there's no superpowers (booooo).
